Grading
Here is the district info for grades this semester.
The default is that you will earn “Credit” for this semester. It will not affect your GPA.
There was a form being sent by the district last week. If you want to opt for a letter grade, you must complete the form by June 5. You can select, by class, if you want a letter or credit. If you opt for a letter grade, it will be the higher letter grade between what you earned on your last progress report and what you have earned at the end of the semester.
It will be denoted on transcripts that these grades are from distance learning and based upon completion of 50% of the usual curriculum (and frankly, colleges know that).
In Aeries, look under “Grades” to see your progress report grade. That is the lowest you will earn if you select to earn a letter grade in Chemistry. If your grade at the end of the semester is higher than that, you will earn that higher letter grade.
PLEASE do not email me asking what your grade was at progress report - you can look it up in Aeries. Also, I cannot advise you about what you should do. No one has any idea how colleges will view the semester (for students taking grades only in their AP classes they have As in to have a "5.0" on their transcript- it will be clear that you are "working the system")
Finally, the last day I will accept work will be June 5. I need the last week for grading. It is YOUR responsibility to look in Aeries and ensure everything is turned in!

Lesson 1
1st Period - Monday 2nd, 4th, 6th Period - Tuesday Congratulations on making it through another week! Today we begin wrapping up our unit on climate change with an assessment. But fret not, if done well it can help your grade! The assessment will focus on what you have learned throughout the unit, your ability to communicate factual information, and persuasive writing. We will discuss the assessment and answer any questions during office hours at 9:00, 10:00, or 11:00 AM for the respective class periods so please join us! (Google Hangouts links are above.) Here is the student answer document. Everything is already linked. Make a copy of the document and rename it, "Letter to Legislator - Your Name". This copy is yours! Type directly in it. Here is the rubric for the assessment. Notice that this is out of 25 points, not the normal 10. This means that we are looking for exceptional work, and expect you to use resources, time, and multiple drafts in order to perfect your assessment. This assessment is due Monday, 5/4 for Period 1. This assessment is due Tuesday, 5/5 for Period 2, 4, or 6. But how do you turn it in?? Great question. This assessment includes special instructions for submitting. Instructions will be provided on Wednesday/Thursday. If you have any questions or just want to chat, please visit us during office hours (see above for schedule)! Or email us and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Every Tuesday and Friday we have office hours by appointment for those who are interested. Lesson 2
1st Period - Wednesday 2nd, 4th, 6th Period - Thursday Good news! There is one easy task for today and that is to fill out this Google Form. Instead of another assignment, you are expected to continue to work on and revise your assessment, and/or get caught up with missing assignments! A warning - avoid PLAGIARISM at all costs! Do NOT copy and paste sentences from articles that you find on the internet. First, write your letter in your own words using the information that you learned over the last few weeks! Then find supporting information or statement from worthy sources that you appropriately cite! Note: Changing every other word of a copied sentence from the internet is still plagiarism. Plagiarism will earn you a ZERO on this assignment! Here is an additional resource for you to use on your assessment. You may find it useful in building your case, or you may not. Choice is yours. Fair warning, there are a few unfavorable words at the beginning of the film and it does have a "sad" undertone to the film. It is very informative but is on the "not hopeful" side. Planet of the Humans When you get to Part 2... If you are in Period 1 or 2, be sure to share your document with Mrs. Carlyle at [email protected]. Then, add your document to the appropriate folder: Period 1 - Letters to Legislator Period 2 - Letters to Legislator If you are in Period 4 or 6, be sure to share your document with Mrs. Kurtz at [email protected]. Then, add your document to the appropriate folder: Period 4 - Letters to Legislator Period 6 - Letters to Legislator In order to receive credit, your letter must be a Google Doc in the correct folder! Here is a video on how to put your letter into the folder. This assessment is due Monday, 5/4 for Period 1. This assessment is due Tuesday, 5/5 for Period 2, 4, or 6. If you have any questions or just want to chat, please visit us during office hours (see above for schedule)! Or email us and we will get back to you as soon as we can. April 20th-24th
Hi All! I just wanted to remind everyone that you will be continuing to receive TWO lessons/assignments per week. Every Monday/Tuesday and every Wednesday/Thursday - so, it is important that you check the website the days you are "scheduled" for chemistry class. Example, 1st period Chemistry is Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30-9:25. So those students should check on Mondays and Wednesday. If you have questions, are struggling with pacing of assignments, etc. PLEASE EMAIL ME OR MRS. KURTZ right away! DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE 3 ASSIGNMENTS BEHIND TO ASK FOR HELP! You can utilize our TUESDAY office hours by scheduling an individual appointment if needed. *This has changed from Monday to Tuesday afternoons (1:30-3:00).*
Also, grading has changed!
As most of you know, the remainder of the semester has gone to credit/no credit. I have created this document that should help you better understand how your grade will be calculated. I want to emphasis a couple of things:
1 - Up until this point you have received full credit based on COMPLETION
2 - NOW, you will be receiving points based on ACCURACY. Your grade in Aeries will now reflect how correct you are for EACH assignment. As you can tell, majority of assignments will be out of 10 points. So, if you receive an 8 out of 10, that is an 80%.
3 - In order to receive "credit" for the semester, you will need to have a 60% or better in Aeries by the end of the semester. If receive a 59% or lower, you will receive "no credit" for the semester.
Again, if you have any questions, please contact either Mrs. Carlyle or Mrs. Kurtz right away!

There are three parts to this first lesson: graphing and interpreting a graph, looking a carbon dioxide, temperature, and human populations, and finally anthropogenic carbon emissions. Starting with the Student Answer Document will provide you with everything you need for this lesson. I want to point out that in Part 1, you are asked to make a graph USING GOOGLE DOCS AND GOOGLE SHEETS. Mrs. Kurtz made a video to help you do this. I DO NOT WANT HAND-DRAWN GRAPHS! Part 2 and Part 3 should be very straightforward with the use of linked readings in Google Docs. These are the resources for each of the three parts: Part 1: Graphing and Interpreting a Climate Change Graph Part 2: A closer look at CO2, temperature, and human population Part 3: Anthropogenic Carbon Emissions You will turn in JUST the answer document. Part 2: Layers of the Atmosphere You will use the Layers of the Atmosphere graph provided on Page 2 of the Student Answer Document and here are the directions that will walk you through the layers of the atmosphere activity. Page 3 of the document will have a series of follow-up questions. When you are completed with both parts of this activity, you will share it with me at [email protected]. If you are in Period 4 or 6, please share with Mrs. Kurtz at [email protected]. Let's try our best to have this completed by Wednesday! JUST A REMINDER - IN ORDER TO GET AN ELECTRONIC VERSION OF THIS DOCUMENT YOU WILL NEED TO "MAKE A COPY" FOR YOURSELF. YOU MUST ALSO BE LOGGED INTO YOUR SDUHSD.NET ACCOUNT. I will be hosting office hours from 10:00-11:30AM this morning on Google Hangout. Pop on if you have any questions! -Mrs. Carlyle |
Wednesday
April 1st Happy Wednesday and Happy April! Hopefully, you have all completed Monday's work. If you haven't, make sure you do that before starting today's activity. We are going to continue focusing on the atmosphere and how it is heated. We are then going to start to understand Climate Change and how the atmosphere plays a major role in Climate Change. There are three parts to today's activity: Part 1: Heating the Earth - First, open the PPT and answer the questions on the Student Answer Document. This will provide you with key information on how the Earth is heated and recycles heat to keep it warm enough for life to be sustained. Part 2: Climate Change Article - You will have to do a little "googling" to find a climate change article that has numerical/graphical data. Please do not just pick the first one you find. Find one that seems interesting to you. Once you have an article, make sure you follow the questions and prompts on the Student Answer Document. (Optional) Part 3: This is an optional portion of the assignment. However, I am NOT assigning anything for over Spring Break. So this might be a good thing to do next week! Watch the documentary, Before the Flood, it is about an hour and half, and answer the discussion questions on the Student Answer Document. I'm hoping you complete this assignment before Monday, April 13th. So you have almost 2 weeks to finish this! I highly encourage you to watch the documentary! -Mrs. Carlyle and Mrs. Kurtz |
